Provo police in the United States are investigating the death of one-year-old girl, Penny Cormani, in whose body an overdose of heroin was found.
The Desert news reported that four search warrants affidavits unsealed on Tuesday in 4th District Court, revealed that police and paramedics found ‘numerous items of drug paraphernalia’ when they arrived the house after they were called on December 2.
Penny’s mother, Cassandra (Leydsman Richards), said the little girl was playing in the front room after feeding her while she was doing some laundry.
At about 11am, according to Cassandra, she put Penny down for a nap with a bottle of approximately 3 oz. of vitamin D milk.
Cassandra went to check on Penny at noon and found that she had purple or blue lips and was not responding.
The baby was pronounced dead at a hospital. The warrants say an autopsy found codeine in her system as well as a lethal amount of heroin.
Provo police officer, Nick Dupaix, says investigators are awaiting final toxicology results and trying to determine whose paraphernalia it was.
According to David Belgard, the homeowner, who let Penny’s family stay with him, said, “It was tragic, it was horrible,” when KUTV spoke with him.
But he claims he had nothing to do with it. He told KUTV the drug paraphernalia found throughout his home wasn’t his. He also denied using drugs, the CBCnews reported.
Belgard also said the contraband items belonged to Penny’s parents, which they denied to investigators.
However, Penny’s parents blamed Belgard for their baby’s death.
No one has been arrested.
