Rivers State Governor, Ezebuwon Nyesom Wike
... Accuses him of targeting Ijaws
The Alliance for Transparency and Good Governance, a civil society non-governmental organisation, NGO, has condemned Rivers State Governor, Mr. Ezebuwon Nyesom Wike, for unwarranted demolition and destruction of properties of innocent citizens of the state. The condemnation, the group stated, is against the backdrop of the outcry of the citizens and residents of the state.
In a statement by signed by its Co-ordinator, Engr. Erasmus Obele Nwankpa, the group condemned “the insensitive and recklessness in the past one year in governance,” in Rivers State. It called on the wife of former President Goodluck Jonathan, Patience, to as a matter of urgency, call Wike to order. Mrs. Jonathan, whom the body accused of imposing Wike on the people of Rivers State, it added, was the mother of the current political crisis in Rivers State.
“Government is supposed to protect citizens and residents of the state but in the present situation, Wike is destroying the peace and harmony of the people”, the statement read in part.
Citing residents of Elechi Beach in Port Harcourt whom the NGO noted now lives in fear over the impending threat by Gov. Wike to demolish their residential quarters this weekend, an action the residents described as insensitive and wicked, the group stressed that by carrying his threat, Mr. Wike would be sending thousands of people into the open with no shelter over their heads. “That would not only be wicked”, the group said, “but a proof that Mr. Wike does not have the people’s interest at heart.”
“They do not have anywhere to go and that it is the duty of government to protect lives and property of law-abiding citizens. If Gov Wike claim that that the demolition is targeted at cultists or militants, he has enough of such persons at Omoku, Ahoada East and West, Emohua and Ikwerre LGAs, Ogoni axis, Buguma, Degema, Etche, just to mention but a few.
“In fact, if Wike meant to eradicate militancy, he should start with his political house and stop moving about with known cultists who have taken over property abandoned as a result of cultist activities in their areas.”
The civil society organisation expressed fear that Gov. Wike's demolition exercise was targeted at the waterfront communities predominantly inhabited by the riverine Ijaws. It has therefore warned that attempts by Wike to push our riverine Ijaws occupying the marked waterfronts would meet with absolute resistance
