Fellow Nigerians, here comes another worrisome issue that have kept me thinking and re-thinking for days and this is in line with a Yoruba proverb which provides that "the nakedness of paka calls for urgent attention."
The rate at which legends, nationals and the likes who contributed immensely to the actualization and development of Nigeria are dying unreplaced from their blood is worrisome and needs urgent attention.
What we grown up and met was that in those days, extremely poor illiterate parents produced Lawyers, Doctors, Engineers, Scientists, Accountants, Architects, Professors whose contribution to the development of Nigeria and Nigerians are beyond measure.
In those days, children do struggle on their own after Primary 6 or Grade 12, to become notable personalities. Most of them trekked kilometres to school with tattered cloth and barefooted, went to farm or did some work including trading after school to survive.
Similarly, those days students are those who do drink from stream water, sleep without electricity, at the midst of mosquitoes and bed buds and on local mats. Surprisingly, all these didn't hindered them from coming out in flying colours. In fact, all these made them to be strong spiritually, mindly, psychologically and socially developing to their outstanding performers.
However, in the society today, it is disheartening, disappointing and worrisome as those days students are now fathers and mothers of today's students. They are now the producers of today's Children who are pampered and helped in their homeworks or home assignments from nursery school through secondary schools to higher institutions.
Today's students are driven to very expensive schools and or are sent abroad to study. They can watch movies all day and all night - after school. They are treated like baby kings and queens, they didn't do any household chores. Food is put on the table for them, their plates are removed and washed by parents or house maids. They are given expensive cars and clothes, not forgetting big pocket monies to be wasted.
The students can speak very fluent English but very few can write correctly. They find it difficult to do things on their own because they are used to help, to think and complete tasks. So they can't help themselves neither can they help their parents nor the society. All they are after is to drive expensive cars and live a flamboyant life.
At this juncture, I will advise parents to reduce the pampering and the unnecessary help you offer your children. Let your children grow in wisdom, intelligence and strength. Let them face the truth and the realities of life. Teach them to grow to become independent adults. Do away the idea of not allowing your kids to taste some levels of hardship for them to be useful to themselves and to the society at large.
Most importantly, teach them to fear God, respect others and develop confidence in themselves. Parents, discipline your children to become disciplined adults, useful and not useless. Failure to meet up with the above, many parents will still die unreplaced by their kids. God bless my father land.
