The Niger Delta Civil Society Coalition (NDCSC) peaceful procession which begins with an audience with the Commissioner of Police, Rivers State today Friday September 2, 2016, at 9am, is about the unparalleled threats to LIFE, LIBERTY, AND SECURITY of citizens and residents in Rivers State.
These are the fundamental precepts of any system of human rights. It is to secure them that "governments are instituted among men and women." All universal declarations of human rights incorporate them. The Nigerian Constitution recognized their essential nature and guaranteed their protection. The reports of the United Nations characterize LIFE as a "minimum human right." Liberty has been described as the "one sole original inborn right belonging to every man and woman by virtue of their humanity."
This is precisely why the right to liberty is not only a fundamental condition of democracy; democracy is a condition of liberty. Just as law is a prerequisite to preserving man and woman's Liberty against infringement by others in the exercise of their Liberty, so democracy is essential to ensure that the law will fulfill that function. That is not happening in Rivers state today. Killers kill with impunity and walk away free. Power is abused simplicita.
As a direct result citizens do not feel themselves secure in their life and liberty. Fearful men and women in Rivers state this moment cannot act in their own or common interest as they themselves perceive that interest. The atmosphere of democracy in the state does not breed confidence in personal security. The equation is this: Life without liberty, however you define that liberty, is meaningless. Without security, Liberty is fiction, and security permeates all levels and all phases of human existence. Without the security to act freely, men and women are not able to act and indeed go about their business freely in the state.
Because people are not doing this, democracy is today a sham in Rivers. Our peaceful protest is a call to action: ensure criminals no matter how highly placed, or those they exist to protect are picked up and made to face the due process of law. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. The killers of our KEN must be found and legally treated.
**Join us at the Rivers Police Command headquarters, Moscow Rd, if you are concerned about humanity and human dignity today Sept 2 , 2016 to peacefully challenge overwhelming impunity. United we stand! Let us build a nation for our children, where armed thugs does not rule the educated - indeed, the intellectual. Rivers State is absolutely NOT SAFE.
