ASSASINATION ATTEMPT ON MY LIFE AND THE LIVES OF SOME CHIEFTAINS OF THE ALL PROGRESSIVES CONGRESS (APC) BY MILLITANTS AND POLICE-OFFICERS ATTACHED TO THE RIVERS STATE GOVERNMENT
Today, the 20th day of March 2016 shall remain indelible on the sands of history. The story of today has set a new record for electoral brigandage in Rivers State. Like a tale told in a war torn movie, today’s rain of bullets on me and some chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC) can only reinforce my belief that God does not fail to protect his people.
Under the superintendence and instruction of the Chief of Staff to the Governor of Rivers State and the caretaker chairman of Ikwerre Local government area, men of the Nigerian Police Force together with some hired armed thugs led by Samuel Nwanosike, rained more than 500 rounds of live ammunition on my bullet proof vehicle.
This episode of gunfire started when my humble self in concert with some chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC), intercepted an attempt by the Electoral Officer (EO) for Ikwerre Local Government Area and some members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to alter and announce the result of the rerun election for Ikwerre Constituency and the Emohua-Ikwerre Federal Constituency. Under our watchful eyes, members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) were making entries into the relevant collation sheets while the EO and some INEC ad-hoc staff stood and watch.
In the believe that we came to sabotage their rigging machinery, myself and the Director-General of NIMASA were attacked by these trigger-happy policemen and hired hoodlums. From Isiokpo to Omagwa, we were chased and shot at severally by these bloodsuckers on the instruction of no less a personality like the Chief of staff Government House Port-Harcourt Engr. Emeka Woke whom as we speak, is in the custody of the Department of State Securities (DSS). The guns boomed without respite. In the process, my car was badly damaged and the Director-General of NIMASA, Hon. Dakuku Peterside, sustained gun shot injuries.
While I thank the Almighty God for preserving our lives, I call on the president and commander-in Chief of the armed Forces to cause an inquiry to be launched into the causes and remote causes of why the Police Force, A federal institution, paid by tax-payers would lend their support to such electoral brigandage and rascality in the company of armed militants and hoodlums. It is my firm belief that the inquest shall not suffer a stillbirth.
I am hopeful that in view of the violence at the Local Government Collation Centre and the attempt on my life by the Nigerian Police Force and hired thugs, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will find enough justification to cancel the election in Ikwerre Constituency in order to restore the integrity of the electoral process.
While investigations into this brazen assassination attempt is ongoing, I call on the teeming supporters of the All Progressives Congress in Ikwerre Constituency and Rivers State to remain calm in the face of this tempting provocation. This is a trial of faith. We shall overcome it soon.
